Bauer misidentified Melitaea arachne W. H. Edwards, 1869, Trans. Am. Entomol. Soc. 2(4): 372, as pola, as determined by F. Brown (1965), J. Lepid. Soc. 19(4): 206-207, fig. 2, and J. Emmel et al. (1998), Syst. W. N. Am. Butts. (2): 32, figs. 243 ♂ D, 244 ♂ V. This is a case of a misidentified type species. The type-species is Melitaea arachne W. H. Edwards, 1869, as designated by Pelham (2008), J. Res. Lepid. 40: 370 (under Code Article 70.3).
